Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) is a high demand job in the growing field of health information technology. To become a RHIT requires a two year certification with health information data, medical records, and a little bit of medical billing. Then you must pass an exam. Make sure whichever school or program you choose is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Health Informatics and Information Management (CAHIIM).There is a great job outlook for RHIT with a predicted increase in demand of 21 percent by 2020.

According to Payscale.com the average salary for a registered health information technician is $32,220.

RHIT’s common tasks include:

  • Reviewing patients electronic medical information for accuracy and completeness
  • Code and Classify patient data using standard classification systems
  • Input and analyze patients health information data to computer database

RHIT’s spend most of their days sitting at a desk working with a computer. The job can become repetitive working with the same codes everyday, but there is alot of opportunity for career advancement. In addition, there is a variety of work environments for a RHIT including hospitals, doctors offices, insurance companies, and government agencies.

RHIT’s must also be very detail oriented because inputing the incorrect information can become a huge problem for the management team.
